Expenditure includes payments to his wife "Dolly" "for house" and "for stable"; payments for books, wines and spirits, rates and taxes, and extensive purchases of furniture and furnishings; licences for armorial bearings, male servants, carriages, and dogs; uniforms for servants and wages and tips to servants; subscriptions to many different clubs and charities; a subscription to "Col. Somerset for Hunt" [almost certainly the Enfield Chase Stag Hounds, of which Col. Sir Alfred Somerset was formerly Master]; bills connected with House of Commons and militia expenses; tuition for his daughter Wilma; and for Coronation seats and lunches. Included in the expenditure are substantial items relating to, and distinguished as, 'Capital Account' - purchases of stocks and shares and advancement of loans and mortgages. Receipts are entirely or almost entirely from interest on stocks and shares and from sales of stocks and shares and repayments and redemptions of loans and mortgages.

 

Inserted loose are 8 sheets of dated and undated financial calculations; a foolscap folio ledger sheet listing companies in which shares are held, book value of shares, and interest for two half-years [? 1905, unfinished]; and a bill, 29 Feb. 1904, for cleaning furnishings, from J. Pullar & Sons, Gledhow Terrace, S.W., 'dyers to the Queen'.
