HWWO/4/1/2; HWWO/4/4-7 were deposited by Worthing District Health Authority in January 1983 (Acc. 5815).

Administrative / biographical background:

The original Worthing infirmary was established in 1829, in Chapel Road. The new Worthing Hospital in Lyndhurst Road was erected in 1881. A children's ward was added in 1889, an Out-Patients Department in 1912 and a wing containing a maternity and paying patients ward in 1923.

 

In July 1948 the Board of Management was dissolved and the administration of the hospital was taken over by the Worthing Group Hospital Management Committee. Under reorganisation of the National Health Service the hospital was transferred to Worthing District Health Authority in 1974.
