Administrative / biographical background: |
This collection was deposited by Miss Maru of Aislaby in August 1956. It was transferred from the Museum Shipping Wing in June 1981. The Henrietta was built in Whitby in 1768, the principal owner and first master being Nicholas Piper of Pickering. She was converted into a whaler in 1775 and made her first trip in Greenland waters in 1776. She is best-known as the whaler which was the first command of Captain William Scoresby, Senior. He shipped aboard her in 1785 (under the command of Captain Crispin Bean), became specksioneer in 1787 and was appointed Master in 1791 until 1792, by which time he had made his reputation and had had several record-breaking voyages. |
