Administrative / biographical background:

This Society was founded in 1791 by Sir William Blizard to provide social welfare services at the London Hospital. Such services have included straightforward financial aid, help with lodging and travel, supply of surgical appliances and provision of convalescent facilities.

 

The Society added the name Marie Celeste to its title in 1899 as a memorial to the first wife of James Hora, a particularly munificent benefactor.
