Catalogue description British Museum (Natural History): Central Administration: Director's Office: Reports and Letters

This series contains all official documents received and dealt with by the Director or Museum Secretary. It includes administrative and scientific correspondence from the British Museum, government departments, institutions and individuals in Britain and overseas, as well as internal memoranda and reports from the heads of departments within the Museum. Printed and duplicated papers and memoranda on a wide variety of topics are also included. Many items were tabled and discussed at meetings of the Standing Committee of the Trustees.

Departmental Annual Reports are in DF 935 . Incoming papers in subject files are held in DF 1004

Arrangement is strictly chronological, and papers were bound into volumes every few years. From 1921 incoming papers were gathered into subject files and the Reports and Letters series was discontinued.

Access conditions: Subject to 30 year closure unless otherwise stated

The series was transferred to Archives in 1985.

Custodial history: The series was the responsibility of the Museum Secretary and was housed in his office for many years.

There are no indexes to the series.
