Administrative / biographical background:

A Committee of Justices was established in Kent before the Industrial Schools Act, 1872, was passed, to consider its application to both boys and girls in the county. Premises in Greenwich were leased for the girls' school in 1873 but given up in 1884 in view of the few cases sent for admission. Land at Kingsnorth was acquired for the boys' school in 1874. The name Stanhope was given to it in 1925 in memory of Lord Stanhope who was chairman of the committee for many years until his death in 1905. The school was evacuated in 1940 and re-established at Ty-Mawr in Breconshire in 1941 and shortly afterwards the administration of the school was handed over to the Brecon County Council. The premises at Kingsnorth remained in the hands of the county. For minutes, pre 1889, see Q/GC, and post 1889, see CC/MC7.
