James Cholmondeley was the third son of George, second earl. He married Penelope, daughter of James, fourth earl of Barrymore and grand-daughter of Richard Savage, earl Rivers, in 1726, when they were aged about eighteen. The marriage had been unsuccessful for several years by 1736, when Lady Penelope left England with her lover, Patrick Anderson. The divorce was finally granted on 1 Mar 1737, conditional on neither party re-marrying. James died without issue in 1775. Penelope died in 1785. Her estates went to her great nephew, George James, earl of Cholmondeley. |
