Selection and destruction information:

The arrangement of the drawings is to some extent conjectural as many are not captioned with scheme title. Therefore care should be taken in referring to particular items, which may be inaccurately arranged.

Reference is made in the descriptions to what are presumably microfilm copy reference numbers on certain drawings. Presumably these are still in the custody of S.T.W.A. in its local or main archives. Most technical data have been omitted from the descriptions. The facsimile drawings may be contemporary dyeline prints.

Administrative / biographical background:

The pedigree of Leicester area water undertakings is roughly as follows.

In 1847 The Leicester Waterworks Co. was formed pursuant to the Leicester Waterworks Act. In 1878 this undertaking was bought by Leicester Corporation and administered by its Water[works] Dept., until Severn Trent Water Authority assumed responsibility for Leicester's water supply and sewage disposal arrangements in 1974.

In 1847 the area of operation was limited by the Act of Parliment to Leicester Borough, Birstall and part of Thurmaston. Resulting from various other Acts and Ministerial orders, the Dept. came to cover an area of supply of 82% of Leicestershire and Rutland and two Nottinghamshire parishes by 1974.
