Title: | Foljambe of Osberton: Deeds and Estate Papers |
Description: |
The great bulk of the archives comprise mediaeval and Tudor charters, deeds, leases and related documents of properties in 24 counties, the majority in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, which came to the Foljambes by purchase or marriage. The largest sub-group is that relating to the Yorkshire estates of the Fitzwilliams, formerly the Clarells, which passed to the Foljambes in the early 16th century. Among the other records those of more than local importance include the musters book describing the government's military preparations for the Spanish Armada in 1588; the bulky and detailed bailiff's account roll of Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln (1251-1311) in 1278, a draft of his will in 1288, and household account roll for 1299, when he was embarking on an embassy to France; a group of estate papers of the Earls, later Dukes of Lancaster relating to the area around Pontefract and Conisburgh Castles for the years 1318-1321 and 1366-1390, including an authorization for part payment of a loan of 500 marks by Katherine Swynford to John of Gaunt in his "great necessity". This latter material probably found its way into the Foljambe archives at the time of Sir Godfrey Foljambe (d.1376) who was a chief steward of the Duke, or his son Thomas, also a Duchy official. Other documents of particular interest are the group of forest books and other records of Sherwood and other forests from the 13th to the 18th centuries, documents relating to the borough of Chesterfield in the Middle Ages, a lease by the Duchy Council of Lancaster of the town of Liverpool and its profits in 1351, and a survey and perambulation of the city of Bristol in 1653. There is a group of charters referring to coal mines at Cortworth and Haugh in Yorkshire as early as the mid 14th-century, and other later papers relate to disputes over commons in Yorkshire, mainly brought about by competition for the minerals beneath them. Amongst documents of ecclesiastical relevance is a detailed extent and customs roll of the possessions of the Dean of Lincoln in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in 1329, and a good group of records of the College of Holy Trinity, or Knolles Almshouses, at Pontefract from 1386 to 1491, including a foundation (confirmation) charter. For the family itself, one of the most important documents bearing on its economic position is a long rent roll of the estates of Henry Foljambe of Walton in c.1500, although this may be incomplete. The first member of the family to take an historical interest in the family archives appears to have been Francis Foljambe II (1675-1752) of Aldwark, for whom Dr. Nathaniel Johnston, the Yorkshire antiquary, compiled a genealogical history of the family in 1704. This manuscript work was a chronicle of the principal members of the family from the 13th century to his own day supported by references gleaned "chiefly from the private charters of the family", but also from documents in the Dodsworth Collection, and possibly from some public records. A number of copies of this work survive, but it did not appear in print until the substantial part of it was published in Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica, vols 1-2, 1834-5. In 1887 the nucleus of the family archives was first systematically calendared for F.J. Savile Foljambe of Osberton by George F. Warner of the British Museum. He divided the documents into six groups according to the countries to which they related. Calendared them on cards, and numbered the documents on the dorse. The cards are preserved as DD/FJ/14/1/1-13. In 1897 the Historical Manuscripts Commission published a report (15th Report, appendix V) on the manuscripts of F.J.S. Foljambe. Compiled by R.E.G. Kirk and the Secretary of the Commission, this largely comprised transcripts and extracts of a few documents which has a bearing on national political history. The muster book of 1588 and a volume of letters of James, Duke of York, to the Prince of Orange in 1678-9 (not in the present collection), were both fully calendared, together with some 18th century political letters. In 1904 Robert White calendared some thirty Nottinghamshire charters and other records, mostly relating to Worksop Priory, in his Dukery Records, and in 1906 a number of the Derbyshire mediaeval charters were abstracted and printed (in English) by I.H. Jeayes in his volume of Derbyshire Charters. This present catalogue includes the main collection as listed by G.F. Warner, with the addition of other mediaeval manuscripts he did not see. However the whole collection was re-numbered by Nottinghamshire Archives in c. 1990. Content Summary DEEDS OF TITLE Nottinghamshire DD/FJ/1/1/1-30 Alverton 13 late 16 C. These documents relate to estates developed from the nucleus originally built up by the family in the Derbyshire Peak District in the Middle Ages, and subsequently augmented by marriages into the Fitzwilliam, Moore, and Thornhagh / Hewitt families with further properties in the Chesterfield area of Derbyshire, in south Yorkshire and north Nottinghamshire. The records were held in the Estate Office at Osberton Hall near Worksop prior to their deposit in the Nottinghamshire Records Office (now Nottinghamshire Archives) in 1962. |

Administrative / biographical background: |
The Foljambe Family The fortunes of a number of well-known Derbyshire gentry families were founded on the holding of Crown offices in the royal Forest of the Peak in the early Middle Ages. Notable examples were the Foljambes, Bagshawes, Balguys, Eyres, Woodruffs and Archers. The earliest references to the Foljambes occur in the mid 13th century, when they appear as foresters at fee, holding land in serjeanty in return for the services of keeping the forest with bows and arrows. One of the first recorded members of the family, Thomas Foljambe, was also at various times in the late 13th century bailiff of the Honour and Castle of the Peak and held the castle from the Crown at fee-farm. The family seem to have lived at Tideswell, one of the chief settlements in the Forest, but by grant or purchase built up estates in several nearby villages at this period. They contributed towards the building of Tideswell parish church in the 14th century, where many of their monuments can still be seen. The family's status was considerably increased in the same century by the first Sir Godfrey Foljambe (died 1376) as a result of his services to the Dukes of Lancaster. He was, at different times, steward of Blackburn wapentake in Lancashire and of the Staffordshire borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, steward of the Honour of Tutbury, and later a chief steward of the Duchy of Lancaster. As such he was one of John of Gaunt's closest associates. In c.1361 he obtained a grant of the important manor of Bakewell, a market town just outside the Forest of the Peak, where he later founded a chantry in the parish church. The fortunes of the family grew in the 15th century as a result of a series of successful marriages, partly achieved by obtaining grants of wardship and marriage, which brought to them further estates, chiefly in north-east Derbyshire and adjacent parts of Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. This meant that by the end of the century the centre of their influence had moved eastwards from the Peak District to the Chesterfield area. Chesterfield was the second town in Derbyshire at this period, and the manor house at Walton, some three miles away, which was obtained by marriage, now became the family's chief seat. A detailed rental of all the estates of Henry Foljambe in c.1500 lists extensive properties in 23 places in Derbyshire (the great majority in Chesterfield and district), 7 in Yorkshire, and 5 in Nottinghamshire, and it is possible that this list is incomplete. Henry's son and heir, the fourth Sir Godfrey Foljambe, found royal patronage as an esquire of the body to King Henry VIII. An unexecuted will of 1513 in the present collection was made by him when "intendyng to go over the see with the kynges grace". He was at different periods receiver and feodary of Tickhill, in the Duchy of Lancaster, escheator of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and three times sheriff of the combined counties. He again furthered the family fortunes by arranging the marriages of his two sons to the two daughters and co-heiresses of Thomas Fitzwilliam of Aldwark, near Rotherham, Yorkshire, neices of the famous William Fitzwilliam, Earl of Southampton. This match brought to the Foljambes extensive estates in south Yorkshire, which the Fitzwilliam had in turn inherited from the Clarell family. Throughout the remainder of the period prior to the Civil War the family continued to be pre-eminent in local affairs, frequently acting as sheriffs and other officials of the counties where their estates lay. They do not appear to have benefited from the dissolution of religious houses, as did so many families in their position (except perhaps by a Crown lease of the prebend of Tickhill with its rectories in 1541). Although most of the family appear to have conformed to the new religion after the Reformation, at least two members of the family were imprisoned for recusancy in the 1580's. This period also witnessed the more intense exploitation of their estate for the minerals in which many of them were rich, but their interests in coal mining and in iron and lead manufacture in Yorkshire and Derbyshire led them into a number of legal disputes with their neighbours, particularly over common lands. The senior male line of the family came to an end with Sir Francis Foljambe, created a baronet in 1622, who, to quote the family chronicler, Dr. Nathaniel Johnston, "was a person of great generousness, but of so profuse a temper, and hospitality to excess, that what by reason of the great jointure of the three ... ladies, and the contentions about the estate and the less regarding of his interest by reason of his having no issue male, he sold Walton and most of his Derbyshire lands, and much of his Yorkshire lands, and entangled others, that reduced that estate which was so great ... to £1000 per annum". On his death in 1640 the residue of the estates reverted to Peter Foljambe of Stecton, Yorkshire (1599-1669), a cousin far removed, who seems to have avoided direct involvement in the Civil War, although during the Commonwealth he was charged with royalist sympathy by the Commissioners of Delinquency. From the late 17th century the chief family seat had moved to Aldwark, where it remained for some 200 years. The male line of this family also failed in the early 18th century, and the estates passed through the female line to Francis Ferrand Moore (1750-1814), a member of a Hull merchant family, who adopted the surname of Foljambe. He married twice, into the Thornhagh/Hewett and Lumley families, both of them linked by marriage with the Saviles of Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire, and all important names in South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire. His descendants eventually left Aldwark and settled at Osberton, the old Nottinghamshire seat of the Thornhagh and Hewett families, where they still remain. |
