This collection was deposited by Elizabeth Smailes in March 1994. It is held in the Museum Shipping Wing.

 

Born in Whitby, Capt Milner went to sea in 1885 as an apprentice on the City of Glasgow. He joined Rowland and Marwood in 1892 as Second Mate of the Fylingdale. He continued with the Company and its successors until his retirement in 1952 as Marine Superintendent (which post he had held since 1921). His first world war service was on the SS Kildale, which was sunk by submarine on 12 April 1917. He was an early member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and a Associate of the Institute of Naval Architects, along with active participation in many local societies and bodies. He died in May 1954 aged 84.
