Administrative / biographical background:

Sixth Form College

In September 1977 Eastbourne Grammar School for Boys was amalgamated with Eastbourne High School for Girls to become Eastbourne Grammar and High Schools which operated on two sites at Eldon Road and King's Drive. From 1 September 1979 it became known as Eastbourne Sixth Form College, although it continued to include the existing Grammar and High School pupils for the next four years. From September 1979 the College ceased to admit any eleven year olds and ceased to be a selective school. As a comprehensive college it still operated on the two sites until September 1981 when the Eldon Road site was entirely taken over by the Cavendish Comprehensive School and the College was based solely at King's Drive

The Cavendish Comprehensive School, previously the Cavendish Secondary Modern School at Melbourne Road, started to use the Eldon Road premises from September 1979 for incoming 11 year old pupils and was thus itself a split-site school. For the next two years, 1979-1981, the Eldon Road buildings were therefore used by two separate establishments, the Eastbourne Sixth Form College and the Cavendish Comprehensive School

Eastbourne Grammar School for Boys

In May 1899 Eastbourne Boys' Municipal Secondary School was established at Grove Hall, Saffrons Road, which had previously been used as a church. The school moved in about 1904 to the newly-built premises at the Technical Institute. In 1919, due to overcrowding at the Institute, Eastbourne Corporation purchased Eversley Court, which had formerly been used by Ascham House School, and three acres of garden for £9,000. By the autumn of 1919 most of the school had been transferred to the new premises, although science and art continued to be taught at the Technical Institute. In 1928 the name of the school was changed to Eastbourne Grammar School for Boys. The school was evacuated on 21 July 1940 to Hitchin Grammar School, Hitchin, Hertfordshire where it remained until 19 January 1943

The Old Boys' Society was started in November 1911 and the School Cadet Corps in April 1916. The Sixth Form was established in 1919 and the new wing housing the assembly hall and science laboratories was opened on 4 June 1930

Eastbourne High School for Girls

In September 1903 Eastbourne Girls' Municipal Secondary School was established in temporary accommodation at Grove Road. By 1915 the school had moved to premises at 5 and 7 Upperton Road where it remained until it moved to new premises in Eldon Road in about March 1939. In 1928 the name of the school was changed to Eastbourne High School for Girls. The school was evacuated in July 1940 to Hitchin Grammar School, Hitchin, Hertfordshire where it remained until October 1942
