This item was donated by Mrs E Snaith in July 1970. The Whitby Piers and Harbour Board operated under an Act of Parliament of 1702 for the improvement of Whitby Harbour and which provided revenue in the form of "Passing Tolls" and duty on goods landed. The Passing Tolls were abolished in 1861, and the Board in 1906, responsibility for the Harbour being passed to the Whitby Urban District Council. Francis Pickernell was engineer for the Trustees of the Whitby Piers and Harbour Board from 1822 to 1861, which position had been held by his grandfather Jonathan up to 1812 (Francis' father, also Jonathan, had been engineer to the Commissioners of the Sunderland Harbour Board). |
