Title: DAVID CAIRD LTD., BARROW-IN-FURNESS
Description:

The collection includes a variety of financial records including journals, ledgers and annual balance sheets. A good, though not complete, series of contract books survives together with other records of production. Also included are two letter books and a large amount of loose letters sent to the Company; a wages book and three apprentice day books. A large number of records from Barrow Haematite Steel Company were also deposited, no doubt a result of links between the two companies.

The firm produced ingot moulds, slag ladles, steelwork castings and castings for general engineering work. The foundry was not taken over by British Steel but remained in private hands. Due to falling orders, the foundry finally closed in 1988.
