A company was formed in 1846 to supply gas to Altrincham and the works built at Moss Lane opened in 1847. In 1893 a further Act enabled a tramway to be built between the gasworks and the railway and this was used by horse traction for the supply of coal until 1925. The area of supply of the company included Hale, Bowdon, Timperley and Dunham Massey. The company were also allowed to supply Partington and Carrington although they did not do so. In 1945 the undertaking was acquired by the UKGC. In 1949 it vested in the NWGB.
