Administrative / biographical background:

Joseph Smithson Ltd, woollen manufacturers, dyers, printers and finishers were founded in 1857, with factories at Craven Edge Mills, Halifax and India Buildings, Halifax. A printing section was added in 1869. In 1900, the Firm became a private limited company and in 1930 the Park Print Works Ltd became a separate company as textile stuff printers, bleachers and dyers. The first 6 Directors of the Park Print Works were Herbert Bairstow, Summercroft, Halifax, textile printer; Ernest Edward Milnes, Addington House, Halifax, textile printer; Charles King, Lightcliffe, textile printer; William Henry Whittell, The Gardens, Skircoat, textile printer; Clifford Tattersfield, Leeds, Company Director; and Stanley Parsons, Harrogate, gent. The Company struggled for less than three years before going into receivership in 1933.

 

Herbert Bairstow joined Joseph Smithson Ltd in 1887 and became a Director in 1913.

 

He later became General Manager of the Park Print Works Ltd
