Catalogue description PATIENT RECORDS

The records listed in this section consist of various types of register and index relating to the medical treatment of patients. They also include the clinical or medical records of individual patients, which exist on microfilm from 1893. Case notes under 30 years old, (many of which are also held on microfilm) are in the charge of the Trust's Health Records Manager.

All records containing details of treatment of identified patients are confidential and access to them may be restricted, subject to access arrangements under the Freedom of Information Act, 2000 and the Data Protection Act, 1998.

Some of the groups of records, which were particularly bulky and of limited value, were destroyed or sampled in 1986. Where this procedure has been carried out, a note has been made in the relevant part of the list. Sampling is normally on the basis of taking the earliest and latest examples and those for every census year (i.e. 1901, 1911 etc.) in between.
