From 1889 until 1965 the Middlesex County Council was responsible for a number of functions in the Hillingdon area. Among these were education and libraries, both of which were taken over by the London Borough of Hillingdon in 1965. The records for both of these areas continue in many cases in an unbroken sequence from County Council to London Borough. They are included under the Middlesex County Council as this was the original responsible authority.
