Introduction This collection of papers deposited by Eric Smith contains personal papers relating to his school, a few Clapham Antiquarians Society records, a large collections of copy negatives and lantern slides of Clapham and surrounding areas and an artificial collection of historical documents, printed items, transcripts and research relating to Clapham Parish. Eric Smith was born in Wandsworth in 1907 and attended Clapham Parochial Boys' School and Emmanuel School until 1924. He subsequently worked for an insurance company until his retirement in 1972. He died in 1990. His principal interest was the history of the Clapham area. He joined the Clapham Antiquarians in 1927 and became secretary and treasurer in 1937; he remained in office for over 50 years. He edited and mainly wrote the society's "Occasional Sheet" from 1947 onwards. He was the author or co-author of many books of local history including Clapham: an historical tour, 1968; Joseph Powell and his drawings of Clapham, 1973; The Parish Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Clapham, 1976; St James Clapham Park, 1979; Macaulay School, 1987; Clapham Saints and Sinners, 1987. The bulk of Eric Smith's papers, research notes and extensive library are held by the present secretary of the Clapham Antiquarians, Mr. Nicholas Long, pending a decision on their long term future location.
