Administrative / biographical background:

In 1857 Charles Anthony, a surgeon and apothecary of Longcause House, Dartington, directed that money be held in trust for the care of the aged poor in Yealmpton, his parish of origin. They were mainly to be provided with clothing, but coal and groceries were included as well. Anthony died in 1863 and in his will made further provision for clothing and also for the education of poor children in the parish. Thus in effect three charities (though administered by the same trustees) came about: the Charles Anthony Charity (founded by deed of 1857) and the Charles Anthony Clothing Charity and Charles Anthony Educational Foundation (both founded by the will of 1863)
