Description:

Volumes of family letters entitled "Letters written by, or occasionally addressed to, members of the Feilding family during the times of William and Basil, the two first Earls of Denbigh in two volumes". The letters were selected and arranged by William Hamper the antiquary in 1827 and those asterisked have been printed in whole or in part or noticed in the 4th report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission [henceforth referred to as the H.M.C.]

 

CR 2017/C1 Not numbered. Command signed by Charles I under the signet summoning William [1st] Earl of Denbigh to his coronation, dated from the Palace of Westminster, 19th January 1 Chas.I. [1625/6]: owing to the late visitation of the plague to London, the procession from the Tower through the city to the Palace of Westminster has been postponed until May. c.1623-1652

 

CR 2017/C1/1 W. [The 1st Earl of] Denbigh to Basil Lord Feildinge, his son, 5th Sept., giving him advice during Feilding's absence from home.

 

CR 2017/C1/2 The same at Hampton Court to the same, 28th Sept. (new style): "Since your departure from hence, I have obtayned leave from the King to make a viage in the east Indian ships, (as a volantere) to the King of Pertia, and the greate Magull, in which voiage I hope to better my understanding and not impeach my estate ... With a note by John Wolferston, made 24th August 1655, that he wrote this letter and that it had been signed by his master,"Basell Fylding"

CR 2017/C1/60 The same in Whitehall to his brother [the same] 25th April 1636: his sorrow at Mr. Morton's behaviour to Lord Feilding; Hamilton will attempt to see that Morton's title in his new post does not exceed that of secretary and that he is made subordinate to Lord Feilding. The letter contains a few lines in code (which have been deciphered) concerning his hopes that Lord Feilding will replace someone now recalled by the King. Half the pictures have arrived.

CR 2017/C1/70-101. These letters from the Marquis of Hamilton inform his brother-in-law of how much the King and Queen approve of his conduct as ambassador in Venice, and warn him against any imprudent actions which could upset good relations between the courts to which he is accredited and the English Government. Some letters make mention of the arrest in Lord Feilding's house in Venice of two persons to whom as Ambassador he had given temporary asylum, and in many letters there are inquiries about the pictures in the La Nave Collection and elsewhere, which Hamilton seemed to be prepared to obtain at any price and in which the King was also extremely interested.
