The sources used here have been very varied: printed trust deeds, title deeds (and schedules of them), property registers, minute books, private ledgers, and so on. The evidence is incomplete, and properties may have been owned outside the dates shown. In one or two cases evidence has been taken from documents examined at the brewery offices at Brighton, but not deposited, particularly, a Constable (GSC) deed of 1904, a Spain Brewery deed of 1881, a Gatehouse (GG) deed of 1889, a Bognor Brewery (Bog) deed of 1879, and a Henty (GH) deed of 1855 Off-licenses and malthouses are not included in the concordance, nor is the extensive private property owned. Further notes on individual companies and their histories will be found in the preceding introduction. Dates shown in this concordance may be earlier than dates of purchase shown in schedules, etc: some properties were leased before purchase Key to Abbreviations Alb Albion Brewery, Brighton (Castle) BB Brighton Brewery (Weekes) Bear Bear Brewery, Lewes Bog Bognor Brewery (Butt) Catt C W Catt's premises (1892-1899) EB Emsworth Brewery, Hants (Kinnell and Hartley Ltd) Edlins Edlins Ltd, Brighton GG George Gatehouse's premises, Chichester GH George Henty (Ltd), Westgate Brewery, Chichester (after 1921 Henty and Constable Ltd) GSC G S Constable and Sons Ltd (A) Anchor Brewery, Littlehampton (S) Swallow Brewery, Arundel Hope Hope Brewery, East Grinstead KH Kidd and Hotblack (Ltd), Cannon Brewery, Brighton Robins Robins and Sons Ltd, Anchor Brewery, Hove SEG Southdown and East Grinstead Breweries Ltd, Lewes and East Grinstead Smithers Smithers and Son (Ltd), North Street, Brewery, Brighton Spain Spain Brewery, Petersfield, Hants (Albery) TLP see TS TS Tamplin and Son (Ltd), Phoenix Brewery, Brighton (TLP) Tamplins Licensed Properties Ltd WCR Watney Combe Reid and Company Ltd (Hastings Agency) Wig Messrs Witney, Ship Street Brewery, Brighton WSB Vallance Catt and Company, West Street Brewery, Brighton, trading after 1895 as West Street Brewery Ltd BREWERIES Exact dates are not assigned here, since the life span of some brewery buildings is not immediately clear. Administrative / biographical background: |
These records are of Tamplin and Son's Brewery, Brighton, Ltd and of absorbed companies. The firm was founded in about 1821 by Richard Tamplin, trading for much of its 19th century life as Tamplin and Son until it was incorporated as a limited company in 1889. The firm was renamed Tamplin's Brewery Ltd in 1962, and is now part of the Phoenix Brewery Co Ltd, taking its name from the brewery at Brighton which has served the Company since its early days Few pre-incorporation records appear to survive. Here, there are private ledgers, a journal, and a stock book, the earliest dating from 1867, but the Company retains extensive title deeds series which throw light on its early history. Schedules of these are available here (TAM/1/31/1-2). In 1867 the Company had about fifty leasehold or freehold licensed properties, besides the Phoenix Brewery at Brighton and another brewery at Worthing (sold in 1885). By 1889 the number of licensed properties had risen to eighty-three. Thereafter expansion continued steadily until about 1930, and picked up again after Tamplin's was itself purchased by Watneys in 1953. By the 1960's the Company managed a large number of houses all over East and West Sussex, with a grouping in South Eastern Hampshire and outliers in Surrey and Kent The process of acquisition began after incorporation in 1889 with the purchase over the next couple of years of several properties, including in 1892 the Albion Brewery business of Mr Marcellus P Castle of Brighton (owned by Keeping and Co before 1873). For deeds of Castle properties on sale to Tamplins see AMS 6009. The South Malling Brewery, Lewes, of Messrs Lyell was added in 1895. No records of either of these firms survive here In 1899 Mr Charles W Catt sold some 74 properties to Tamplins, and himself joined the board. He had been owner of the Old Ship Street Brewery in Brighton, and until 1892 had been a partner in the West Street Brewery business of Messrs Vallance Catt and Co. His properties were formerly of that partnership, which is further discussed below. In 1900 Tamplins purchased the Brighton Brewery business of Mr R C Weekes, with twelve houses Then in 1920 the firm leased the extensive business of the Southdown and East Grinstead Breweries Ltd of Lewes and East Grinstead, with option to purchase, and in fact bought it out in 1924. The Southdown Brewery at Lewes was a long established business belonging to Messrs Hillman, and although no records are available here, (title deeds etc now deposited: see supplemental introduction at beginning of s.4 of list), some idea of the build-up of the firm can be gained from the schedules of title deeds The next purchase by Tamplin's was of the Cannon Brewery business of Messrs Kidd and Hotblack Ltd of Brighton in 1926, again with many houses. The firm dated back to about 1871 as Messrs Kidd, and a few property records are deposited here. Additional items will be found in the HOW series. In 1926 Tamplin's formed an associated company, Tamplin's Licensed Properties Ltd, to hold (principally) the properties acquired from Kidd and Hotblack, but although there are separate records here of this firm, the trading records will be found as part of the main Tamplin's series At the end of 1928 Tamplin's bought the Anchor Brewery business of Robins and Sons Ltd of Hove, with another dozen or so licensed premises. No records of this firm survive here The last major purchase at this time was of Smithers and Son Ltd and of the West Street Brewery Ltd, both of Brighton, in 1929. In fact Tamplin's purchased all the ordinary shares of Smithers in 1929, after which that Company went into liquidation, and since Smithers had from 1913 owned all the ordinary shares of the West Street Company, control here also passed to Tamplin's. The West Street Company was formally wound up in 1937. The business of the two companies had been merged in 1913, Smithers undertaking the trading while ownership of properties remained distinct, but it seems that some properties had passed to Tamplin's management even before 1929, the date shown in the concordance below To turn aside from Tamplin's affairs briefly, Smithers was also an old-established concern: sale particulars of a brewery at Preston in 1792 (TAM/6/1/7) already refer to a Smithers, and title documents (or schedules) deposited here made it clear that the business was well-established in the 1830s. It was incorporated in 1906, and the brewery was in North Street, Brighton, for most of the Company's history (with another at Hurstpierpoint in this century). Apart from the fusion with the West Street Brewery Co in 1913, Smithers in 1919 bought out the business of Messrs Mews of the Portslade Brewery (itself the inheritor of John Dudney's Brewery) and indeed improved that establishment so as to transfer at least a major part of its brewing operations there. Apart from title deeds, virtually no administrative records of Smithers (or of the Portslade Brewery) are available here, but some annual reports 1913-1927 are available in HOW 11/6 and 11/12. Not all the Smithers' properties went to Tamplin's in 1929; a number were sold to the Kemp Town Brewery By contrast quite good records of the West Street Brewery Co are available. It derived from the business of the Catt family of Newhaven (associated with the Bishopstone Tide Mills, etc), and of the Vallance family of Brighton, the latter being the original owners of the West Street Brewery. It seems that the families were already in partnership by 1827, trading for much of the 19th century as Vallance Catt and Co. They were not only brewers, maltsters, and wine and spirit merchants, but coal merchants as well. Some records are deposited here; others relating to Catt affairs generally are deposited (but unlisted) as part of ACC4299, where the extensive papers of Henry Willett are relevant because he was Henry Catt before changing his name in 1863. In 1850 Vallance Catt and Co bought up much of the brewery business of Messrs Wigney of Brighton, bringing in the Ship Street Brewery to the partnership. Vallance Catt and Co continued to trade as such until 1895, when the firm was incorporated as the West Street Brewery, Brighton, Ltd, but the partnership had effectively been dissolved in 1892, when Charles William Catt decided to trade independently, leaving the West Street business to members of the Willett, branch of the family. Catt took a large number of licensed houses as his share of the dissolution, and in 1899 sold them to Tamplin's (as noted above). The later history of the West Street Company has already been noted; the records available here can be supplemented by other documents in the HOW 11 series In 1953 Tamplin's was itself taken over, by Watney Combe Reid and Co Ltd (subsequently Watney Mann) but its name was retained as that of a subsidiary Company, and far from being run down the business was substantially expanded. Immediately some 50 properties of the Watney Hastings Agency were transferred to Tamplin's management, including several in Kent Two years later (1955) Watneys bought and annexed to Tamplin's the Westgate Brewery business of Messrs Henty and Constable Ltd of Chichester, again a substantial concern even though about half the properties were separately sold to Friary of Guildford (later Friary Meux). Henty's, like several other businesses represented here, was also an old-established firm. It can be traced at least to 1855 when George Henty already owned about a hundred properties in West Sussex and Hampshire, and was incorporated in 1893 as George Henty and Sons Ltd. Early purchases included the Bognor Brewery business of John Butt in 1879 (with three houses), the Spain Brewery business at Petersfield, Hants, of Edwin Albery in 1881 (with four houses), and the twenty-six houses of George Gatehouse of Chichester in 1889 In 1921 Henty's merged with G S Constable and Sons Ltd (incorporated 1904), who operated from the Swallow Brewery, Arundel, and the Anchor Brewery, Littlehampton. The resultant Company was thereafter known as Henty and Constable (Brewers) Ltd, the headquarters remaining at the Westgate Brewery, Chichester. G S Constable had been trading at Littlehampton since at least the 1860s, and Arundel since the 1850s. Finally, in 1929, Henty and Constable took over the Emsworth Brewery business, mainly based in the Havant and Gosport areas of Hampshire, from Messrs Kinnell and Hartley Ltd (incorporated 1903). Quite full post-incorporation records of both Henty's and Constable's are available here Lastly, so far as these deposited records are concerned, Watneys in 1967 purchased the firm of Edlins Ltd, brewers of Brighton, whose property holdings were of hotels and restaurants rather than public houses, and who were particularly involved in the wine and spirit trade. The firm was incorporated in 1924, and some records are available here. It owned about a dozen hotels at any one time If the 19th century records of Tamplin's are disappointingly sparse, the records since incorporation will be seen to be quite full - at least so far as the company management, shareholding, property and trading sides are concerned - and the lists will speak for themselves. This is very satisfactory in view of the importance and size of Tamplin's in the local brewery scene. Records of absorbed companies vary considerably, with some being completely undocumented, and others being well represented One brief word of explanation is perhaps needed, that the great majority of Tamplin's properties were vested in trusts, with the property records reflecting the various divisions. The earliest trusts were called 'A' and 'B', with Tamplins Licensed Properties Ltd forming in effect a third after 1926, and the 'Smithers' trust after 1931 taking in properties acquired at that time Lastly, in 1949-1951, Messrs Tamplin and Son Ltd and Mr E R Burder deposited a number of redundant early deeds of licensed premises with the Sussex Archaeological Society, whose records have now been transferred to the care of the East Sussex Record Office. They refer, inter alia, to the Millers Arms, Elephant and Castle, and Fire Brigade Inns, Brighton; the King's Head and White Lion Inns, Cuckfield; the Lamb Inn, Durrington; the Castle Inn, Horsham; the Dorset Arms Inn, Lewes; the Nutley Inn, Nutley; the Railway Inn, Bopeep, St Leonards; a brewhouse at Worthing; and the South Malling Brewery. The deeds are listed in the series SAS/BR, and there is a detailed index at the beginning of the appropriate catalogue |
