Administrative / biographical background:

E. Boydell & Co. of Manchester, under the trade-name of Muir-Hill, pioneered the manufacture of dumpers in this country and produced the first British machine in 1927. They also began the manufacture of loaders and tractors. By the end of the Second World War they had established a reputation as leading manufacturers of dumpers, loaders and shunters.

The company later became associated with Winget Ltd., and E. Boydell & Co. transferred the whole of their Muir-Hill manufacturing business from Manchester to Gloucester when a merger took place between Winget and the Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Co. Ltd., in 1962. Muir-Hill was part of the Winget Gloucester group until c.1969; it then became a member of the Babcock & Wilcox group until c.1977 when Babcock Muir-Hill formed a division of Babcock Construction Equipment Ltd., a subsidiary of Babcock International Ltd.

In 1983 the company was taken over by Wibau U.K., a German subsidiary of I.B.H. International, but the Muir-Hill trademark is still being used.
