Administrative / biographical background: |
Mrs. Howarth's father emigrated from America to England. She didn't know much about him except that he had been an artist as he died early. Mother lived in Burton-on-Trent. Because she was widowed Mrs. Howarth started work in the mill at 13. She hated it. Had top of middle finger on left hand mangled while cleaning machinery as supervisors wages were stopped if it was turned off. Left first husband as he beat her and worked in hospital in Rochdale where she met her second husband. |
