Administrative / biographical background:

Mr. Lambert was born and brought up in Yorkshire. He attended Leeds Grammar School and went on to do teacher training, initially as a science teacher. While out on teaching practice he noticed how craft work caught the interest of a wide range of pupils and decided to specialise in craft education. After World War Two he taught craft education and wood-work in secondary schools before moving into teaching in colleges. He finally became senior lecturer in Handicraft and Rural Crafts at the City of Worcester Training College. By fostering the use of local materials and simple skills he hoped to introduce pupils to ideas of self sufficiency and a sense of personal achievement. Towards this end he has experimented with methods of producing even the necessary tools in the classroom.
