Administrative / biographical background: |
After the move to South Kensington in 1881, the General Herbarium occupied the eastern half of the 2nd floor of the east wing of the Museum. It remained there, becoming more and more congested, until it was badly damaged in an air raid in September 1940. The Department moved temporarily across into the 2nd floor of the west wing, and this became the permanent home for the General Herbarium, which was refitted by the end of 1948. |
