Administrative / biographical background:

Samuel Lees of Alt Hill probably founded a smithy at Park Bridge around 1670. Park Bridge smithy was founded by Samuel Lees in 1786 on land rented from the Earl of Stamford. In 1806 the business was taken over by Hannah Lees, and expanded. Iron manufacture probably started in the early 1800s. Samuel Lees, Hannah's son, inherited Park Bridge. Another son, Henry, set up an ironworking business at Bridge End, Ashton under Lyne. The company remained in Lees family ownership until its closure in the 1960s.
