Mostly English, but some German

Date: 1827-1838, 1852, 1879-1881, 1890-1957
Arrangement:

Arranged in the following sections: early papers and papers relating to Staff College; correspondence; memoirs (first draft); lectures; writings by Edmonds; papers relating to World War One; miscellaneous writings by Edmonds and others; newspaper cuttings; second accession (later draft of memoirs and photographs).

The Edmonds papers contain a large number of interesting miscellaneous material collected by him, but they are not a comprehensive record of his work, probably because he did not keep all his papers, and other were destroyed after his death. Some of his correspondence was mutilated and only the signatures saved, (see Edmonds II/6). Re rarely kept copies of letters sent out by him and there are few papers directly connected with the official histories or other published books. There are a large number of miscellaneous scrape which he pasted onto paper at random and tied into files: 'War Scraps'. He describes this method in a note (see Edmonds VII/12).

An attempt has been made to organize and list the papers so that they can be identified a little more easily. Some files such as R.M.A. Woolwich Memoirs, visit to Switzerland in the Boer War, etc. did not need re- arrangement; others have been added to or collected together by the archivist (correspondence, lectures, writings etc).

Correspondence (Edmonds II)

This was in several envelopes without any clear separation. Some of the more interesting letters had been collected together in alphabetical order [by Mr. B.J. Bond, Lecturer in the War Studies Department] before the papers came to the Centre, (see Edmonds II/1). The rest of the correspondence has been placed in chronological order (see Edmonds II/2). Undated letter have been tentatively dated or placed at the end of the section. There is no list of correspondence, only a personal name index.

"Memoirs" (Edmonds III)

These are in fact mainly composed of essays by Edmonds on the situation around him 1890-1919 rather than directly connected with his own career. Chapters I-XII (covering pages 1-233),were not found amongst his papers and were probably miscellaneous writings, later broken up and placed in other assorted files.

War Scraps and papers (Edmonds VI)

These files are mainly composed of papers from the war scraps books collected by Edmonds as noted above, although only a few came to Kings College intact. A rough guide only to their contents is given.

Newspaper Cuttings (Edmonds VII)

Edmonds sorted his newspaper cuttings into subjects and numbered them according to their place in a subject index he compiled. Hence not all the numbers between 1-35 were used possibly some of the newspaper cuttings have been destroyed, or no cuttings on these subjects were collected). As far as possible unumbered cuttings have been placed according to this plan (Nos 36 & 37 have been added by the archivist).
