The firm of Chanter & Ffinch, later Chanter, Burrington & Foster, of Barnstaple, was concerned with many families and interests in Barnstaple and its environs, from the mid-19th century onwards. This collection, consisting largely of deeds and leases, covers properties in most of the North Devon parishes, including some as far south as Colyton, Clyst Honiton, Woodbury and Exeter. The greatest number have been accumulated from the Acland estates in Fremington and Somerset, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Barnstaple itself is well documented with both deeds and leases mainly of the 17th to 19th centuries. There is also a large collection of papers relating to the petition for and construction of the Barnstaple - Lynton railway in 1895-96. The remainder of the deposit comprises, amongst other records, some 14th to 17th century manorial documents for the Manors of Fremington and of Curry Rivel, Fivehead and Stathe in Somerset; estate and family papers, a large quantity of which relates to the Sampson family of Chard (Somerset) and Colyton; some Barnstaple business partnership records; a sizeable collection of papers concerning the Braunton turnpikes of the mid 19th century, and a few documents relating to shipping, mining and militia. Unfortunately, very little of the solicitors' own business diaries and correspondence features in this collection. Such as there is covers the dates 1804 - 1942.
