Bartelot was the son of the Revd Robert Leach Bartlett, and his family pedigree can be seen in Burke's Landed Gentry 1952. They descended from Adam Barttelot, of Sussex, fl 1295/6. It is possible to see that many of the original MSS here listed must have descended to him by intermarriages. At some point Richard Grosvenor Bartlett decided to adopt the more antique spelling of Bartelot, and his obsession with ancestry, particularly royal ancestry, is apparent in this collection of papers. He transcribed and published a number of Dorset parish registers, contributed to Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries, wrote the History of Crewkerne School (1899), The History of Fordington (1915), and, with A M Broadley, The Three Dorset Captains at Trafalgar (1906). The final box also includes papers of Canon CH Mayo. |

This report was made as part of a survey undertaken by the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts of the papers of British antiquaries and historians. A note on the lid of 4333-345 by RGB 1936 says property of Owen Richards Esq, Downes, Monkleigh, Bideford, Devon Loose and unnumbered in box 4707-737 is a small printed card for admission to the churchyard for 'Vicar's wedding'. On it, Bartelot has written in red ink, 'Never was there such a crowd in the memory of Fordington'. " |

Main groups are: D/RGB/11626-11674 D/RGB/KF1-118 D/RGB/LL1-737 Individual items include: 3259 (missing in 1955) NA1, reunited in 1970 with Fordington parish records as P86/VE 2 D1/394 The collection was numbered museum-style as unpacked, so that the arrangment is unstructured. One of the most imprtant family groups represented is that of the Bragge family of Sadborowe in Thorncombe, which until 1844 was a detached part of Devon surrounded by Dorset, and at that date transferred to Dorset. Other Bragge MSS from different sources are: D1/8335-9110 D83 D104 Time has not permitted checking all place names or interpretation of regnal years. |
