Administrative / biographical background:

In 1899, by a Local Government Board Order, the parish of Southwick was constituted an Urban District under the Local Government Act of 1894. (For a plan see County Council records CP116).

In 1938, by a West Sussex County Council Order, the Urban Districts of Southwick and Shoreham, together with the parish of Lancing and part of the parish of Sompting, were formed into a new Urban District of Kingston Buci. However, the outbreak of war meant that this Order never came into effect. (For a plan of the proposed District, see UD/SH15/2/5).
