leasehold and copyhold: as GRA 22/17 freehold: Thomas Ellis of Barcombe, mason, bequeathed two messuages, buildings and land at Barcombe Cross to his wife Mary for life, with remainder to his kinsman Samuel Ellis by his will of 7 Feb 1759, proved at Lewes on 21 Apr 1760; Mary Ellis died in 1770 and Samuel Ellis in 1780, leaving three sons; John and Henry Ellis died without issue and were survived by their brother Samuel Ellis of Penhurst, yeoman, who conveyed a messuage at Barcombe Cross, occupied by Richard Dobson, son of the former owner Richard Dobson (E: road; S, W: tenement of Catherine Coppard, late Samuel Midmore; N: land of William Pollard, before [blank] Attree, before Thomas Goodman) for £42 to Arthur Longhurst of Barcombe, blacksmith, on 17 and 18 Jul 1793; included (occupied by Robert Markwick) in the sale from Richard Holmwood to William Balcombe Langridge [see GRA 22/17], 19 and 20 Sep 1800
