Catalogue description British Army: Monthly Army List

A private Monthly Army List appeared between 1798 and 1808. It was succeeded in January 1809 by a new Monthly Army List published with official sanction, which was made an official publication in 1854. The title was The Army List for [month, year] until August 1881, when it was changed to The Monthly Army List for [month, year].

Quarterly indexes (Jan, Apr, Oct) appeared from April 1868 to October 1873, replaced by monthly indexes from February 1874, and a separate quarterly Retired List with its own index appeared from October 1881 to October 1897. Between May 1915 and April 1917 a separate monthly supplement of promotions, appointments and casualties was issued, becoming quarterly from July 1917 to April 1920. A separate half-yearly (Jun, Dec) supplement of the Reserve and Territorial Forces, rewards, undisposed balances etc. was issued between December 1923 and December 1938.
