Administrative / biographical background: |
An Act of 1822 [3 Geo IV c.57] established Improvement Commissioners for the town or tithing of Bognor in the parish of S. Bersted, and two later Acts, of 1825 and 1835, enlarged the powers of the Commissioners. In 1866 a Local Board of Health was also established for the same area, under the Local Government Act of 1858, and in the following year the powers of the Commissioners were either abolished or transferred to the Local Board [Local Govt. Supplemental Act (1867) no. 5]. By Local Government Board Order of 1874 part of the parish of S. Bersted was transferred to the Local Board district. The new boundaries appear on the 2nd ed. 6" O.S., 1899. By a W.S.C.C. Order of 1894 that part of the civil parish of S. Bersted within the district of the Local Board was renamed "Bognor", and the remainder "Bersted", and in January 1895 the Local Board was succeeded by an Urban District Council, under the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1894. By a W.S.C.C. Order of March 1900 part of Bersted and part of Pagham were added to the Urban District. For a map see County Council records, ref. OC/CC 7/1/6. Bognor assumed the suffix "Regis" by permission of King George V to commemorate His Majesty's convalescence at Aldwick in 1929 after a serious illness. Under the West Sussex Review Order, 1933, part of Pagham, including the whole of Aldwick, Rose Green and Bay Estate, the major part of Felpham, and part of Bersted were added to the Urban District. |
