Description:

The collection includes a large number of letters sent to the 7th Viscount by friends, acquaintances and family members including her brother, Ellis D. Gosling (1861-1897), Alfred F. G. B. Lumley, 10th Earl of Scarborough (1857-1945), Duchess Charlotte Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1868-1944), Countess Eleanore Grafin Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn (1840-1933), Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace (1841-1919) and from her husband and son, the 7th and 8th Viscounts. There are also a large number of letters from her mother, who after the death of Ellis Gosling in 1861, married in 1863 John C. F. Ramsden. Letters from her mother are present in the main series of correspondence and also form another separate series listed after the miscellaneous papers. The miscellaneous papers were originally divided into 14 bundles and include bills and accounts, solicitors' papers, photographs, locks of hair and other family mementoes.

Administrative / biographical background:

Vere was the only daughter of Ellis Gosling of Busbridge Hall, Godalming, Surrey (d 1861) and Susan, daughter of Rev. Edward Duncombe. She married George Edmund Milnes Monckton-Arundell, 7th Viscount Galway in 1879 and died in 1931.
