Copy of Probate Copy of Will of Frauncis Rodes, Justice of the Common Pleas:- To be buried in Staveley Church. Confirms settlements of the manors of Houghton, Byllingley and Hickleton and property there and in Darfyld and Bolton (all co. Yorks) to sons Peter, Godfrey, Robert and Francis the younger. Recognizances and Bonds to Godfrey. Annuities of £40 to Robert and Francis, junr. Goods at Hickleton and moiety of arrears of lead to Peter. Confirms revocation of Settlement of the manor, mansion house and park of Barlborough on son Francis Rodes, senr. (made on account of his misconduct) and resettlement on son John. 2 rent charges of £25 each on property of Thomas Leek and William Rockley, esqs. to son F.R. senr. if he apply himself to study law. Provision for enforcing payment of £500 (residue of £600) to daughter Katherine from the estate. £100 to daughter Troweth on reaching the age of 18 or marrying (she having already been assigned £500). Confirms provision already made for daughter Elizabeth after her intended marriage to Richard, son of Robert Tempest, esq. £500 each at marriage to daughters Attalyne, Cycelye, Judethe and Brigget, who are to be brought up by their eldest brother John at either Staveley Woodthorpe or Barlborough. Rent charges of £8 each to the new grammar school at Staveley Neitherthorpe and for founding 2 scholarships at St. John's Cambridge; of £4 for relieving wounded soldiers of Staveley, Barlborough and Elmton. Bequests of goods and chattels to daughters Katherine and Troweth. A gold chain to "daughter Bassett" for life, then to 'her sonn and myne' Nedd Bassett. House rent to old servant Jefferie Watson, who is to assist "my eldest son" with his advice on the getting of iron and coal; receiving £6.13.4. yearly for every year 2000 loads of coal are got, and 5 marks for every additional 1000 loads. £20 to servant Robert Gilberthorpe. £10 to servant Thomas More if he marries "my kinswoman" Dorothy Needham.
