Administrative / biographical background:

The land on which Winker Green Mills was to be built was bought by one Samuel Eyres in 1863. The Mill must have been built sometime between 1863 and 1891 as a deed in 1891 shows on the plan the actual layout of the mill buildings.

It was owned at this time by one Marshall Stables and William Heron Stables trading under the style of William Eyres & Son - woollen manufacturers, presumably to carry on the name of Samuel Eyres, Marshall Stables being one of the witnesses to his will in 1864.

Bennett's Business Directory lists William Eyres & Son of 5 Russell Street and Armley, Leeds as woollen manufacturers and woollen merchants of Park Place and Stanningley, Leeds in 1908.

Fred Armitage Lodge acquired Winker Green Mills on 2 May 1919, transferring it to the name of Fred A Lodge & Sons Limited on 9 May 1946 for the sum of eight thousand pounds.

Kelly's Directory of Leeds lists Fred Armitage Lodge & Sons as woollen manufacturers of Winker Green Mills, Stanningley Road, Armley in 1940.

Fred Armitage Lodge & Sons Limited consisted of Fred Armitage Lodge (the elder), James Percy Lodge, Fred Armitage Lodge (the younger), Norman Stead Lodge, John Edmund Lodge and Stanley Lodge in partnership.

The layout of the buildings of Stonebridge Mills are shown on a deed dated 1896, although it was not until 30 November 1931 that the Mills were acquired by Fred Armitage Lodge.

Like Winker Green Mills, Stonebridge Mills were transferred to the name of Fred A Lodge & Sons Limited on 9 May 1946 for five thousand eight hundred pounds, two thousand pounds less than the sum paid for Winker Green Mills. From this date Stonebridge Mills became the registered office of F.A.Lodge & Sons and it was here that all the accounts were raised.

Fred Armitage Lodge, the elder died on 24 April 1953 and the company finally came to an end in 1980.
