Administrative / biographical background:

The Amalgamated Union of Operative Bakers of England was formed in 1861. In 1914 it changed its name to Amalgamated Union of Operative Bakers, Confectioners and Allied Workers of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1925 it changed its name again to the Amalgamated Union of Operative Bakers, Confectioners and Allied Workers. The union shortened its name to Bakers Union in 1964 and later expanded it to the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union.
