Administrative / biographical background:

The National Union of Boot and Shoe Rivetters and Finishers was established in 1874. In 1890s the name was changed to the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives. In 1971 the union amalgamated with several others to form the National Union of the Footwear, Leather and Allied Trades. In 1991 the National Union of Footwear merged with the National Union of Hosiery Workers and Knitwear to form the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trades, which in turn merged with the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation to form COMMUNITY.
