Selection and destruction information: Preservation criteria: murder or manslaughter, infanticide and child destruction; charges under the Official Secrets Acts, treason, treachery and sedition; life sentence cases; offences committed by life licensee; imposition of restriction orders unlimited in time; offences committed by a patients on leave of absence or conditional discharge from a special hospital; IRA or other terrorist organisation cases; matters of public concern, e.g. riots; Trials of general historical interest. Cases involving eminent or notorious persons. A representative selection of other case files to show a wide variety of cases. Files not included above where sentence is longer than 7 years. Class 4 offences such as Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent, Robbery and Conspiracy and 'either way' offences to be represented by a small illustrative number of files (e.g. one file for each type of case). Cases referred to in the Sex Offenders Act 1997 where the notification period exceeds five years.
