Any freeman is entitled to demand from the Divisional Court of the High Court of Justice a writ directed to the keeper of a prison commanding him to "bring up the body" of a prisoner with the cause of his detention so that the court can inquire into its justification. The court can then remand the prisoner to prison, admit him to bail or release him.
