Reference: SC 8/344/E1298
Description:
Petitioners: Elizabeth Fitz Gefferey (Fitz Geoffrey), widow of John Fitz Geffrey.
Name(s): Fitz Gefferey (Fitz Geoffrey), Elizabeth
Addressees: Prince.
Nature of request: Fitz Gefferey shows that her late husband was seised of the manor of Clapham in his demesne as of fee, and enfeoffed her father and others of her friends with the manor for the use of the petitioner for the term of her life according to the agreement had between the petitioner and her husband upon their marriage. The petitioner and her husband had issue, John, and upon her husband's death, certain people pretending that her late husband died seised of the manor of Clapham and held of the prince, though this was not the case, have taken John, her son, away from the petitioner, claiming him to be a ward of the prince, though there was no cause to do this. She requests that she may be restored to the possession of her son, and to command her father, who has his keeping, to deliver him to her according to right and conscience.
Nature of endorsement: [None].
Places mentioned: Sandon, Hertfordshire; Clapham, Bedfordshire.
People mentioned: [Edward Plantagenet], prince [of Wales]; John Fitz Gefferey (Fitz Geffrey), late of Sandon and late husband of the petitioner; John Durem (Durham), father of the petitioner; John [Fitz Gefferey (Fitz Geffrey)], son of the petitioner and her late husband.
Note: The petition is dated to 1480-1483 because the petition is addressed to the prince [Edward Plantagenet] and he was prince until 1483. The petitioner's late husband died on 3 August 1480 (C 140/75/53).
Date: [1480-1483]
