Henry Bothe (Booth) and William Pirton. |
Bothe (Booth); Pirton, Henry; William |
Commons of parliament. |
[This petition is damaged] The petitioners state that they were seised of the manor of Bubnell in Derbyshire together with other lands and tenements in Tideswell, Calton, Birchill, Nether Haddon and Willersley . . . [Roger] Leche, knight, until lately, when they were disseised of certain lands and tenements in Tideswell by one Sampson Meverell, Isabel his wife, and others. They recovered these, but were then disseised of Bubnell. They sued a writ of re-disseisin against Sampson, Isabel, and the others, and the sheriff summoned the parties to appear before him and the coroners on the Saturday before St Lawrence last; but Sampson, Isabel, Edward Folcham and others, assuming that it would go against them, seized the jurors on their way to the inquisition with force and arms, and threatened them and forced some of them to swear that they would not speak against them, so that the jurors did not dare to appear. The hearing was adjourned to the Tuesday before the feast of St Giles in the king's first year: again Sampson, Isabel and Edward threatened the jurors, and the inquisition found [in their favour]. The Sheriff heard of their actions, and went with force and arms to arrest them; but they fled to Cheshire, returning later to Derbyshire to kill the petitioners; and they have several times broken down into the house of John Gesnore, servant of Henry and William, by night, intending to kill him. Sampson, Isabel and Edward Folcham have been outlawed for felony and murder; but they are still threatening them. They ask the commons to pray to the Duke of Gloucester and all the other lords, spiritual and temporal, of parliament, to send writs to the Sheriff of Derbyshire to make proclamation that Sampson, Isabel, Edward and the others are to appear before the justices of King's Bench between now and a month after Easter, and to give the petitioners security to keep the peace; or to be put outside the king's protection forever, and their goods and chattels forfeit. |
