[This petition is badly damaged] Henry de Grey states that while he was in Gascony with Ralph Basset, the Seneschal, at the command of the king's father, his father, John de Grey, died. After his death the king took all his lands and tenements, in Wales, in the Welsh March, and in England, into his hand, and received the issues from them, from the feast of the Apostles Simon and Jude to the feast of St Mary Magdalene. When he returned to England, Henry requested the return of these issues, but could not have this, because of the enmity of Hugh le Despenser the son. He asks the present king that he might have [paymnent] He also requests an allowance for his wages and for horses lost by him in the king's service. |
It seems to the council that for the time when he was in the king's service his being in that service ought not to be prejudicial to him if it please the king. And because of this, before the king.With regard to the point touching issues, the king wishes to be informed of how much his father was answered of. And when he is informed of this the king will give him compensation on good advice in wardships or . . . or in other things, according to what he sees is to be done. And with regard to what is in arrears to him for his wages and compensation for lost horses, the then Constable of Bordeaux or some other person who was concerned with such a thing, and to provide information on the manner . . . what is in arrears of his wages and for his lost horses etc., and to him . . . as above etc. |
