Administrative / biographical background: |
The divisions of the short-lived Ministry of Social Security were absorbed into the new Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) with little evident change. The social security functions of DHSS continued to be administered in two main offices, the Blackpool Central Office, re-named North Fylde Central Office in the late 1970s and Central Pensions Branch at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The Central Office was opened in 1946, initially dealing with allowance books, and later dealing with pensions and unemployment insurance. It was divided into branches - Child Benefit (Family Allowances); Central Pensions; Computer Services; Contributions; Establishment and Organisation; Management Services; Overseas, and Records. The Central Office was almost wholly geared to case work, but each branch had its own series of policy files. Central Pensions Branch (with the Child Benefit and Contributions branches) was responsible for overseeing the payment of retirement pensions and related benefits. |
