Details of SC 8/296/14754
Reference: SC 8/296/14754
Description:
Petitioners: John Adam of Romney, esquire, William Broghton (Broughton) of Rye, Stephen Abby of Hythe and Thomas Carpenter of Hastings, Barons of the Cinque Ports.
Name(s): Adam; Broghton (Broughton); Abby; Carpenter, John; William; Stephen; Thomas
Addressees: King.
Occupation: Barons of the Cinque Ports
Nature of request: The petitioners state that they were the four Barons of the Cinque Ports chosen according to the terms of various agreements and ordinances to have governance of the last fair at Great Yarmouth, between the feasts of Michaelmas and Martinmas, but that John Pyn and Richard Elys, bailiffs of Great Yarmouth, with Robert Cuppere and others, had tried to prevent their governance of this fair, as is explained more fully in a schedule attached to this petition. They request writs to John Pyn, Richard Elys, and Robert Cuppere, to come before the King in council or in Chancery, to be examined on this and to do what will be ordained by the council.
Nature of endorsement: [None]
Places mentioned: Romney, [Kent]; Rye, [Sussex]; Hythe, [Kent]; Hastings, [Sussex]; Great Yarmouth, Norfolk; Westminster.
People mentioned: Edward III, King of England; John Pyn, bailiff of Great Yarmouth; Richard Elys (Ellis), bailiff of Great Yarmouth; Robert Cuppere.
Note: Datable to 1430-1431, as SC 8/296/14753 mentions the date of 9 October 9 Henry VI [1430], which this petition suggests was during the last fair at Great Yarmouth. The petition must date from between Martinmas (11 November) 1430 and Michaelmas (29 September) 1431. All four petitioners sat in the parliament of January 1431.
Date: [c. 1430]
