Details of SC 8/266/13260
Reference: SC 8/266/13260
Description:
Petitioners: Adam Coppendale, Thomas de Beverley and other good men of Beverley.
Name(s): Coppendale; de Beverley, Adam; Thomas
Addressees: King and Council.
Nature of request: The petitioners request remedy, stating that during the recent troubles various rioters took by force the common seal of the town and forced them to make various bonds against their will. They also replaced the usual governance of the town, by 12 men elected annually on St Mark's day, with an alderman and two chamberlains, although there have been no such officials in Beverley for 50 years except Manby and Ryse, who were deposed for their bad governance.
Nature of endorsement: [None]
Places mentioned: Beverley, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned: John de Manby; Thomas de Ryse.
Note: This petition clearly forms one of the numerous petitions relating to the events in Beverley in 1381.
Date: [1381]
