Reference: SC 8/265/13242
Description:
Petitioners: Richard Denis, son of John Denis.
Name(s): Denis, Richard
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: Richard recounts that his father John, who was killed in the King's service defending the island of Jersey, had been appointed receiver of the lands and tenements of those who should live in France in time of war, and had offered to give account during his life praying that he might be dismissed from the bailiwick because he would not receive any of the said escheats due to the danger of the war and the wardens refused him, and soon afterwards the King's enemies killed John and robbed him. Now the prior of Wenlock and other ministers of Otto force him to account on his father's behalf though he has none of the goods, of which he awaits an enquiry, and requests remedy because his land on this account has been taken into Otto's hand.1)
Nature of endorsement: Coram Rege.2) If the things contained within are true his seized goods should be restored under good security to stand aright.
Places mentioned: Guernsey, [Channel Islands}; France; Wenlock (Much Wenlock), [Shropshire].
People mentioned: John Denis of Guernsey; [Henry de Bonvillars], prior of Wenlock; Otto [de Grandison].
Note: Dated in Channel Islands Petitions to c. 1300. The reference to the Prior of Wenlock suggests that the petition probably relates to the Channel Islands eyre of 1299-1300 (see Crook, Records of the General Eyre, pp.191-2).
