Description:

1 collective petition (William Stewart, shoemaker and Mary McCrea/Mary Stewart, the parents of the prisoner) on behalf of Alexander Stewart, tried (with Thomas Kenmore, his wife [not named] and John Kenmore, their son) and convicted at Ayr Circuit Court of Justiciary held on 20 April 1827 of theft of money and a pocketbook from Niven McKenzie, shopkeeper. There are character references for the prisoner's parents from John Forsyth and William Black, magistrates and a covering letter from the prisoner's parents. Grounds for clemency: age (16 years), did not have counsel, the prisoner is the parents only means of support in their old age and the prisoner was acting under the influence of members of the Kenmore family, who planned the theft. Initial sentence: Stewart and John Kenmore: 14 years transportation. Thomas Kenmore and his wife: 12 months imprisonment. Annotated: 'To remain in Engd [England] if he behave well'. AN 10. [Scot]
