Description:

Folios 47-48. Letter from Edward Appleton, Stalybridge, [Lancashire], concerning animal maiming in the parish. The 3 horses stabbed belong to Daniel Harrison. A £50 reward has been offered and a free pardon will be applied for if information comes from an accomplice. Also an engine house, owned by the Dunkinfield Coal Company [at Cheshire] was set on fire and a £50 reward offered. Appleton suspects a group of workers, sawyers, who had a 'very strong union' He believes that they had attempted to 'kill' a couple of non-union sawyers earlier. He asks for reward monies to be made available and a pardon to be offered to any accomplice coming forward.
