Petitioners: Community of Dorset.

Nature of request: This petition is in three parts, from various sections of the community of Dorset:1) The community of Dorset ask the council that Richard Lovel, Roger Chandos and William Everard might be associated with Robert Fitz Payn in the guard of the sea, as the most suitable men in their counties. And as the weakness of Dorset does not allow it to make a sufficient guard, they ask that the people of Somerset might aid them, as has been done before in similar case.2) The people of the vills and hamlets of Swanage, Langton, Studland, Whitecliff, Holwell, Godlyngston, Herston, Lazerton, Acton, and Moulham, and of other hamlets in Purbeck in Dorset state that all their goods and chattels are burnt and destroyed, and that they have nothing left to live on, although they are charged as much for the fifteenth and for wools as before. They ask the King and council that they might be discharged.3) The people of Blackmoor in Dorset state that the King's progenitors, by their charters, deforested all the woods of Blackmoor except the King's demesne lands in Blackmoor, but that the Wardens of the Forest south of the Trent and their ministers have ordered the Sheriff of Dorset to take the woods back into the King's hand and to return them to the forest. They request a remedy and that their charter might be allowed to them.

There is also a mention of Robert Fitz Payn and Richard Lovel in connection with the sea defences of Portland in CCR 1339-41 p.12, dated 10 February 1339. William Everard and Robert Fitz Payn are mentioned as commissioners of array and of the peace in CPR 1338-40 p.481, dated 28 January 1340.
